Miqui Puig: ‘Being able to put on a record whenever I want, that for me is home’

The singer, DJ and radio presenter opens the door to his home and explains why beauty sometimes fits inside a freshly baked bread roll

Miqui Puig (L’Ametlla del Vallès, 1968) was the leader of Los Sencillos, the band that defined Spanish pop in the nineties with tracks such as It is pretty y Evil woman. Since then she has been a solo singer, a DJ at festivals such as Sónar and Primavera Sound, a TV judge and, for the last eight years, the daily voice of Wooden track, your dance music show on Catalunya Ràdio. A pop dandy, elegant and showman, who published his first book in 2025.

We have asked him to open his front door in La Portería, the most gossipy section of our Real People podcastof what it sounds like, of what it won't negotiate and of what I would buy tomorrow if I could.

Tell us about yourself and your work. Where did your vocation come from?

I always say that I am a singer and that I make a living from singing and the surrounding activities. Since I can’t devote myself 100 percent to just making songs, selling them, and singing them, I’ve been lucky enough to be on the radio, playing gigs, and writing. I don’t really know where the vocation comes from: they say that my grandfather saw me singing on the stairs in my parents’ house when I was little, and that’s where he said, he would pass the plate to collect the money… He wasn’t entirely wrong.

What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of home?

Pancho. She's our dog, our Border Collie, a beauty of five years old that walks around here and that When I arrive from the party, she greets me with many kisses.

What smell or sound makes you feel instantly at home?

For me they are more sounds than smells, although I really like smells too. But the important things are Pancho's barking and my sound system, one downstairs and one upstairs: one for the study and one for leisure. Being able to put on a record whenever I want, that to me is home.

What is your non-negotiable factor when choosing a place to live?

Unfortunately, the non-negotiable factor right now is being able to afford it. I'm a self-employed performer: I pay for all my own shows, all my own productions, and paying the rent regularly is non-negotiable.

How has your experience with estate agents been?

Always very empathetic. An artist needs a space to work and create, And it also requires flexibility in many legal aspects. With the agents, we have always had a very good relationship.

A great plan at home always includes...

Wine, friends, discos, blankets, series: everything that is comfort and is home. I spend so many hours traveling and working for others, between waiting in hotels and airports, that at home I look for very simple things.

What song have you had on repeat at home lately?

I am making the programme Wooden track for eight years now, so there are songs that stick to my cortex in an inexplicable way. Right now it's Passion Fruit, by a New York band called Gilligan Moss: the home track of the year.

Which item in your house would you say is very you?

We have a huge M-shaped sign from the garden that belonged to Com Ràdio, the radio station where I worked for many years. When they dismantled it and changed the name, I kept the whole sign: the friends shared the rest of the letters and I kept the M. For Miqui, for my partner and for many more things.

If you could buy anything for your home right now, what would it be? Anything goes!

I'd love to buy loads and loads of new towels, loads of new blankets, practical things for day-to-day life. I bloody love the word comfort for a house.

How do you imagine the home of the future?

Unfortunately, by dedicating myself to what I do, I believe the future will be common: sharing nice houses among friends with the same affinities. It all leads to exorbitant prices and a certain real estate madness, but I wish we could live like this, with good character.

What do you find most satisfying about your work?

To see that other people care, to a greater or lesser extent. To see the faces of satisfaction of the people when they are below the stage, singing or playing, or when they stop me in a gas station to tell me that they are fans of the radio show: that's worth it. It is worth it even in the moments of doubt and fear that have accompanied me for years.

What inspires you?

I always say that beauty inspires me. And Beauty for me is a tree, good architecture, Pancho's hair, The wheel of a motorcycle, the stitching in an old coat.

«Beautiful and well-made things, especially those made by artisans: even a good bread roll before you cut it. There is inspiration in that too.

Favourite colour, book and film, in that order!

Amidst Pancho's barking, vinyl records and a letter M bearing his name lit up over the garden, Miqui Puig he defends an idea of a home without artifice: one built on comfort, friends all around and the beauty hidden, he says, even in a freshly baked bread roll.
