Hort de tardor

Post written by Mònica Batalla from Inland

The tardor is a time of change in living beings and as such plants make them more visible. It's the season when the bright colours fill the streets of our city, and the vegetation and the flowers change colour and prepare to fall... With the flowers already on the ground, the parks and gardens of our city are transformed into colourful catifes.

It is also the symbol of Halloween, this festival of Anglo-Saxon origin that we have imported in recent years. Curious that it is a carabassaoi? Well, there is a good explanation, as this is the time of their collapse! Originally, they were placed inside and placed outside in order to illuminate the deceased on their way back to the world of the living.

We can plant the carabasses on our terrace or balcony, making sure that they have something close by where they can be planted; any reed or vine can be used. Tradition says that they should be planted on Holy Thursday, i.e. at the beginning of spring.

Now it is also the time to harvest the last of the figs, and the lean ones are bursting with success with the first late afternoon rain, they are ready for the harvest!

The lemons start to get fat and the olives take on a magnificent purple colour, almost ready to pick.

Before winter, during the months of October and November, it is also the time to cut the pottery and dry it to use it in winter. And, mind you, we can have it all in our little garden or on our terrace!

What can we plant at this time of year if we want to have a winter full of flavours and colours? Well, winter spinach, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, white cabbage, allioli, ciboulet...

All of this can be planted perfectly in gardens, making the combination of textures that we like the most. By the way, if you don't like alliums or cibulet, don't worry, because you can also plant them to enjoy their fantastic white, pink and lilac flowers all spring and summer long!

We can also sow the following seeds: encyam, beet, faves, canonges, ruca or pastanaga, and we will be able to harvest them at the end of the winter.

The most important thing for success with all these vegetable species is that the soil must be always moist and that they have good exposure to the sun. The soil must be rich, and it is necessary to renew it every year. We will continue talking about the garden in the future. In the meantime... Let's get to work!

Autumn is a time of change in living beings and as such plants make them more visible. It's the season when the bright colours fill the streets of our city, and the vegetation and the flowers change the colour and prepare to fall...
