Blanca Olmos: handmade and contemporary ceramics

An activity to disconnect and connect with herself.

Blanca has been working in the fashion world as a designer for years. As she says, it is a stressful and fast-paced industry, so she managed to find a haven of peace and tranquillity in ceramics. What started as a hobby, she quickly became passionate about, and that is how, little by little, the project took on a beautiful shape, just as all her pieces do.

1. Tell us about yourself and your work. Where did your vocation begin? Any first memories?

Blanca Olmos Studio is a contemporary and minimalist design studio. We make ceramic jewellery and home-decor pieces inspired by the mix of simple, organic and geometric shapes. All the pieces are handmade one by one in our workshop in Albacete respecting sustainability. This makes our pieces very special, as they are handmade, no two pieces are the same.

I am a graphic designer and I have always worked in the world of fashion. But I'll tell you 3 curious things so that you can get to know me:

  • I love surfing. I've been surfing for a while now. And, if I could, I'd be soaking all day.
  • I lived in Italy for 4 years and, to this day, I still use certain expressions in Italian.
  • I'm crazy about small dogs.

2. What do you find most satisfying about your work, and any that you are particularly proud of?

What I find most satisfying about my work, I would say, is the process of creation. Working with my hands is very rewarding and relevant to me.

3. What is your creative process like? What are your sources of inspiration? Any particular music while working?

I let myself be inspired by everything around me: art, fashion, trends. Everything can be a source of inspiration for me.

Personally, I love to work listening to podcasts, I find them really interesting and entertaining.

4. Favourite colour, book, film and record - in that order! 😉

Neutral colours, although in my work I like to use all ranges of colours.

I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes.

Film... phew! I wouldn't know which one to choose.

My podium: Queen/Beyonce/Frank Ocean

5. Is your home a reflection of who you are? Tell us what it smells like, your favourite corner, your favourite decorative object or piece of furniture, if you treasure a collection... And if you have a pet, introduce it to us!

I would say yes, my house is a reflection of who I am. My studio is indoors because what I like is for the space to be pleasant and beautiful. My favourite corner, without a doubt, is an area in the living room where I have a reading chair with a beautiful rustic wooden table and several plants around it.

Yes, I have a pet. A month ago Pincho arrived in our family, a beautiful Dachshund puppy that we are in love with!

6. If you could buy anything right now and take it home, what would it be? Anything!

I would love a giant plant that reaches the ceiling and takes up half the living room.

7. A great plan at home always includes...

A good home-cooked dinner.

8. Do you have a signature dish?

Pad thai! with lots of coriander - I love it!

9. What is your favourite place in your city and abroad?

Definitely the countryside. Going for a walk in nature seems to me to be something super underrated and it is really necessary for our body and mind. It recharges us with energy.

Blanca Olmos found her oasis of peace in ceramics, a project that began as a simple hobby, ended up taking shape and with a lot of hard work and tenacity, became what it is today, a delicate, handcrafted and contemporary beauty.
