A textile factory reconverted into a designer loft

Barcelona is a land of surprises and our eagerness to collect its most extraordinary habitats has allowed us to discover small jewels - like the one we present here - and to get to know spaces that hold part of the history of the city and its neighbourhoods. However, this is not the only vestige of the city that we have had the good fortune to visit, as Monapart has also been home to unique dwellings such as this one. fàbrica de veles de vaixell converted into a loft o aquest floor that used to be the ballet school of Pauleta Pàmies. However, we find a house that has undergone a radical monapartització carried out by a pair of architects, Elena del Pozo and Dimitri Davoise, the team that forms Meta-Studio accompanied by Eduard Solé, they show us all the ups and downs of a reform process that has lasted more than two years.

The loft is on the top floor of a building that used to be the Grober textile factory in the Gràcia neighbourhood.

In fact, some of the structural elements that have been preserved, such as the wrought iron beams, bear witness to the industrial past of the house.

For Elena and Dimitri, the most important thing was to be able to conserve the proportions of the space and its volume, maintaining the sensation of spaciousness and its daily character.

That's why they decided to play with the materials and furniture to build the different areas.

The dining room, for example, is situated on a ceramic tile that delimits the space and connects visually and geometrically with the kitchen through its terracotta and tiled floor.

Preserving the loft's spaciousness and its enormous proportions while integrating the more intimate areas of the house has been achieved thanks to the construction of an upper floor that houses two bedrooms and a bathroom and also functions as a study that can be accessed by means of a mobile ladder that can be moved around the entire room. A perfect solution that delimits the areas and guarantees the sensation of a single open space at all times.

A large part of the furniture has been designed by themselves, such as, for example, the dining room table, a piece that integrates all the materials they like the most, iron, wood and copper. They are self-confessed lovers of the noblest materials and this passion is evident in a large part of the house, such as the wrought iron ladder, the bathroom and bedroom furniture, the enormous larder and the stone and stone floors.

And the cirereta del pastís is the terrace with privileged views of Barcelona. The connection with the loft has been possible thanks to an old masonry that offered the possibility of joining the loft and the terrace through a wooden ladder that also functions as a storage room and a courtesy bathroom. Another solution that makes the most of the space. And sitting on this cosy terrace, we are joined by Elena and Dimitri, enjoying a pleasant summer afternoon in the best company.

The before and after of the renovation process that has turned an old textile factory into a designer loft located in the Gràcia neighbourhood....
