Have you ever seen an old photo of the Cathedral? With a rectangular façade, a nondescript arch and a discreet dome, it looked more like a neighbourhood parish church than a cathedral. That's what much of the Gòtic was like in the mid-19th century, until the locals had a fit of horror vacui and started adding ornamentation to the streets and buildings as if they knew that a century and a half later it would be the scene of selfies taken by half the world.
And why is that? Genuineness is relative, and it doesn't matter if your home is decorated with antique furniture or with the holy trinity of Ikea (Klippan+Kallax+Lack). The important thing is that you feel comfortable in it and that it is comfortable. Of course, it's also nice if it looks good on your Instagram.
