St Catherine of Alexandria was an early Christian martyr, one of those whose faith caused them to emerge miraculously unscathed from any torment except beheading, as Christopher Lambert in The Immortals. Over the years, historians have questioned not only her immortality, but the very existence of the saint. They say that some clever person was inspired by Hypatia, a very cool but not at all miraculous Greek aunt, and mixed it with the medieval tradition of attributing magical powers to Christian martyrs.
If one day history will set things right, I propose to keep the name of the square and dedicate it to Caterina ValenteThe music world's contemporary saint, whose dances and polyglot songs have much more in common with the modern, joyful and multicultural spirit of this neighbourhood.
