St. Catherine of Alexandria was a martyr of the early years of Christianity. One of those martyrs that their faith left them miraculously unscathed from any torment except beheading, as happened to Christopher Lambert in Highlander. Over the years, historians have questioned not only martyr’s immortality but the very existence of the saint. Some think that some smart guy was inspired by both Hypatia, a very-cool-but-nothing-miraculous Greek goddess, and by the medieval tradition of magical powers attributed to the Christian martyrs. And voilà!
If someday the history puts things in place, I propose to keep the name of the square and dedicate it to Caterina Valente, a musical contemporary saint, whose polyglot dances and songs have much more in common with the modern, lively and multicultural spirit of this homonymous neighborhood.
